Last year Staples awarded $25,000 to Stelly's Secondary through its Superpower Your School Contest, which helps improve outdated technology. Stelly’s was recognized for its eco initiatives. In addition to regular recycling, bottle return and composting, the school hosts other environmental initiatives like, neighbourhood garbage pickup, local beach cleanup, battery recycling, annual clothing swaps and a herb garden. Other daily initiatives include staff and students bringing their own water bottles and mugs to refill at school. Just by this habit alone, 100 disposable cups are spared from the landfill daily and 300,000 water bottles have been filled. Staff and students are also moving in a paperless direction, which means more digital resources, along with the school-wide adoption of Google Docs so communication can be done online. Stelly’s largest environmental achievement however, is probably its Youth in Action and Global Perspectives programs where students have raised more than half a million dollars to build schools and wells in third-world countries.
