What is Global Perspectives?
Global Perspectives is a two-year program that encourages our grade 11 and 12 students to make a difference in the world around them. In grade 11, the primary focus is helping out in our local community by volunteering at Our Place, a local soup kitchen, participating in invasive species removals and discussing community issues in class as well as listening to guest speakers that are experts on the topics. In grade 12, the class travels to a developing country and works on a humanitarian project in an impoverished community. Previous projects have included building schools in Peru, Fiji and India as well as constructing women’s shelters in Nepal and many other projects around the globe.
This Year’s Trip
Tanzania is a poor country. Their school system lacks the resources we take for granted and many students are unable to receive a proper education due to the distance from their home to school and the lack of dormitory space at schools. Since many families cannot afford to educate all their children, it is often the girls who miss out on education. The goal of our grade 12 class this year is to make a difference at one school in Katesh, Tanzania. We will be working with the Canadian Harambee Education Society (CHES) and the local government to build this dormitory at a rural secondary school. We are looking forward to learning about and experiencing the rich and distinct culture that Katesh has to offer. This trip will be the experience of a lifetime and your contributions tonight will make the building of a girls dormitory possible.
