Global

The literacy rate in the impoverished region of the high Andes Mts of Peru is 54%. Some children grow up without any access to education. The Stelly's Global Perspectives Program has now built 5 schools, and will be returning to this region in March to build its 6th!

You can be part of this very important project by attending to our fundraiser on Wed. Nov 24 starting at 5:00 at Stelly's school. Our goal is to raise $20,000...which will fund an entire school.

Tickets for the evening are $15. (available at the door) which includes an amazing evening of slides, entertainment and food served by our global students. In addition, we will have our amazing silent and live auction of donated items. All funds raised will go directly to the building of the school project. So you too can be part of our project...Join us!

Peru 2010
Last week the Global Perspectives Program from Stelly's Secondary School returned from their 18 day trip to Peru. The group of 16 students raised $20,000 in their fall Gala Fundraiser, then sent the funds ahead to the community of Agua Dolce high in the Andes Mts. The community then began site preparations for the arrival of the Global Group on march 5. At 12,500 ft. altitude, the students worked with community members to complete the project. "The energy at the worksite was just amazing. We had almost 80 people working together to make this happen" said grade 12 student Jessica Payne.

The Stelly's group also built 43 clean-burning woodstoves for the nearby community of Huallyabamba. This project will have a direct benefit to both the the health of community member, and the environment. "It was so exciting to be working with the families right in their homes....and to know that these stoves will have a huge benefit for these people." said Jen Yee.

The group also brought over 400 coats for the impoverished families in the high Andes Mts, and they managed to bring wheelchairs along for 2 paraglegic teenagers. "This trip was the most amazing thing I have ever done." said Amy Paterson. The program is presently looking to another amazing project for next year. Join us!

Global Cleanup
On Thurs and Fri. February 18-19, the Stelly's Global Perspectives 12 Class headed to the Camp Barnard outside of Sooke to complete the 2010 Boot Camp. The group spent the 2 days getting ready for their March 5-23 trip and project in Peru. They hiked, cleared brush, cooked, ate lots, sang around the campfire, and generally bonded. Great fun was had by all. They are counting down the days.

Jets Overhead

In the wake of the recent disaster in Haiti, students from Stelly’s Secondary School banding together to make a positive difference. With help from the school staff, alumni, and the community at large, the students of Stelly’s Global Perspectives, Amnesty Club, and Performing Arts Department put on a benefit concert for Haiti.

A huge thanks to everyone that helped in some way to make this a such a special evening. From the many students, alumni, and special guests, including the Commodore Big Band and Jets Overhead, for donating their time and talent putting on a fantastic show. To the dozens of students, teachers and volunteers, who worked behind the scenes to make this event such an enormous success. We raised over $9700 last night. This amount will be matched by the Federal Govt. bringing the total to more than $19400 for Haiti. Well done Stelly's! Once again, you have made us all very proud.
